Germany operates one of the most comprehensive social welfare and progressive taxation systems in Europe. When negotiating an employment contract in Munich, Berlin, or Frankfurt, an employee with a nominal €70,000 gross salary (Brutto) typically takes home between 55% and 62% in net bank credit (Netto) depending on their assigned Tax Class (Steuerklasse), state of residence, and church affiliation.

1. The 6 German Tax Classes (Steuerklassen)

Tax Class Target Demographic Basic Tax-Free Allowance (Grundfreibetrag)
Steuerklasse 1 Single, divorced, or permanently separated individuals €11,784 per year (Standard)
Steuerklasse 2 Single parents entitled to relief allowance (Entlastungsbetrag) €11,784 + €4,260 single parent bonus
Steuerklasse 3 Married primary earner (spouse must take Class 5) €23,568 (Double tax-free allowance)
Steuerklasse 4 Married couples with roughly equal earnings (Default) €11,784 each
Steuerklasse 5 Married secondary lower earner (spouse takes Class 3) €0 (Zero basic allowance — heavy withholding)
Steuerklasse 6 Second job, secondary employment, or missing tax ID €0 (Highest possible tax withholding)

2. The 4 Statutory Social Security Deductions

Social security contributions are split equally (50/50) between employee and employer up to statutory contribution ceilings (Beitragsbemessungsgrenzen):

  • Pension Insurance (Rentenversicherung - RV): 18.6% total (9.3% employee share).
  • Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung - KV): 14.6% + approx 1.7% average additional contribution (approx 8.15% employee share).
  • Long-Term Nursing Care (Pflegeversicherung - PV): 4.0% total (approx 2.2% to 2.8% employee share depending on number of children).
  • Unemployment Insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung - AV): 2.6% total (1.3% employee share).

3. Solidarity Surcharge & Church Tax

  • Solidarity Surcharge (Soli): 90%+ of German earners pay 0%. Only single earners paying over €18,130 in annual income tax incur the 5.5% surcharge on the tax amount.
  • Church Tax (Kirchensteuer): Registered members of Catholic or Protestant churches pay an extra 8% (Bavaria/Baden-Württemberg) or 9% (other federal states) calculated on their income tax amount.

4. Married Couples: Class 3/5 vs Class 4/4

When one spouse earns significantly more (e.g. 65%/35% split), choosing Steuerklasse 3 for the high earner and 5 for the lower earner increases immediate monthly household cash flow. However, annual total tax is reconciled on the mandatory joint tax return, preventing any unfair tax advantage.

5. Worked Example: €70,000 Single Earner (Steuerklasse 1, No Church Tax)

Gross Salary: €70,000 / year (€5,833 / month)
Income Tax (Lohnsteuer): ≈ €14,350 / year
Social Security (RV + KV + PV + AV): ≈ €14,150 / year
Solidarity Surcharge / Church Tax: €0
Total Deductions: ≈ €28,500 (40.7% total rate)
Net Take-Home Pay (Netto): ≈ €41,500 / year (€3,458 / month).
