How to Calculate Your Final Grade

A weighted grade accounts for the fact that not all assignments carry the same importance. A final exam usually matters more than a single homework assignment, so it carries a higher weight. This calculator lets you enter each assignment's grade percentage and its weight, then computes your overall course grade.

Weighted Grade Formula

Final Grade = Σ (Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ (Weight)

Multiply each assignment's grade by its weight (as a percentage of the total), add those products together, then divide by the sum of all weights. If your weights already add up to 100, the division step simply returns the sum.

Standard Letter Grade Scale

  • A (90–100%) — Excellent, GPA 4.0
  • B (80–89%) — Good, GPA 3.0
  • C (70–79%) — Average, GPA 2.0
  • D (60–69%) — Passing, GPA 1.0
  • F (below 60%) — Failing, GPA 0.0

Example Calculation

Suppose you have three assignments: Homework (90%, weight 20%), Midterm (85%, weight 30%), and Final Exam (78%, weight 50%). The weighted grade is (90×0.20 + 85×0.30 + 78×0.50) ÷ 1.00 = 18 + 25.5 + 39 = 82.5%. That corresponds to a B and a GPA of 3.0.

How Weights Affect Your Grade

Weights determine how much each assignment pulls your final grade. An assignment worth 50% of your grade has five times the impact of one worth 10%. This means a strong final exam can rescue a mediocre midterm, but a poor final can undo strong earlier work. When planning your effort, identify the highest-weight assignments first — those are where a few extra points move your final grade the most. If your weights don't add up to 100, this calculator normalizes them automatically by dividing by the total weight, so you can enter relative weights (e.g., 2 and 3) instead of percentages.

Plus/Minus Grading

Many schools refine the letter scale with plus and minus grades. A common breakdown is: A = 93–100%, A− = 90–92%, B+ = 87–89%, B = 83–86%, B− = 80–82%, C+ = 77–79%, C = 73–76%, C− = 70–72%, D+ = 67–69%, D = 63–66%, D− = 60–62%, and F below 60%. This calculator uses the broader A/B/C/D/F bands for the primary letter grade but converts to a precise GPA on the 4.0 scale with plus/minus adjustments.

What Grade Do I Need on the Final?

If you know your current grade and the weight of the remaining final, you can work backwards to find the score you need. The formula is: Required Final = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. For example, if you have an 85% average, the final is worth 30% of your grade, and you want a 90% overall: Required = (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%. In that case, reaching a 90% would require scoring above 100%, which may not be possible without extra credit.

Percentage vs. Points-Based Grading

Some courses grade by total points rather than weighted percentages. In a points-based system, each assignment is worth a certain number of points and your grade is the sum of points earned divided by total possible points. Weighted grading and points grading produce the same result when every point is equally valuable, but they diverge when categories have different weights. This calculator uses the weighted percentage method, which is the most common format in college syllabi. If your course is points-based, you can convert by treating each assignment's point total as its weight and your percentage score as the grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?+

Multiply each assignment's grade by its weight (as a decimal), then sum those values and divide by the total weight. For example, if homework is 90% with a weight of 20% and exams are 80% with a weight of 80%, the weighted grade is (90×0.20 + 80×0.80) ÷ 1.00 = 82%.

What letter grade does my percentage correspond to?+

On the standard US scale: 90–100% is an A, 80–89% is a B, 70–79% is a C, 60–69% is a D, and below 60% is an F. Some schools use plus/minus thresholds (e.g., 87–89% = B+).

How do I convert my percentage grade to a GPA?+

Each letter grade maps to a point value on the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Plus/minus grades adjust by 0.3 (e.g., B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7). This calculator converts your weighted percentage to the nearest letter grade and then to its GPA equivalent.

What weights should I use for my assignments?+

Weights should add up to 100% (or 1.0). Common weightings are homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25%, and final exam 35%. Check your course syllabus for the exact weight distribution your instructor uses.
